MY PRO-PEACE LETTER-WRITING CAMPAIGN!
I am an ordinary person. I am no one special. I ask a simple question.
Why war?
I was taught the Golden Rule as a child, to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Later, I learned about respecting the inherent dignity of human life, protecting the sanctity of life itself.
I am a mother, and now a grandmother. I have three sons, and if I even allow myself to think of one of them dead on a battlefield, my heart wrenches, I begin to sob, and my soul aches. I am no different from any other mother of any child living in a war zone or fleeing from her home with few belongings and child or children in tow. I cannot imagine my home destroyed, running for my life, being in a refugee camp, or spending the day searching for water or food.
I was raped once...I survived. Yet when I see the faces of women -- young and old -- raped as a systematic act of war, the horror of it fills my brain, my life, with unbearable grief.
Where is the outrage?
Why is the world so silent, as war rages around our planet?
I am an ordinary citizen of the world. I can no longer sit idly, passively watching the planet go up in smoke.
We are neighbors. We are family. We are meant to live in peace, sharing this planet and its resources together. We must find another way, other ways, to live in this world together, without destroying one another or the planet.
Can we talk? Can we learn to dialogue, to listen to each other, to actively raise our levels of concern for one another, beyond our own needs? Isn't it possible that the ordinary citizens of the world can band together and work for common understanding?
We are not powerless. We can be the solution we seek. We can, and must speak out against the abominations of war. Now!
Otherwise, we are not fit to be called human beings. We are not human by virtue of standing upright. We are worthy of being humans when we honor and uphold the preciousness and dignity of life itself, in whatever form it takes.
I am an ordinary citizen and I stand up today and say:
No more war! No more war! No more war!
